the Mountains
It's a dark and gloomy night when two children decide to visit a ghost town. It's lonely. It's deserted.
And it's certainly eerie. The main street is filled with tumbledown storefronts and there's not a soul
in sight. But then the kids spot a boarded-up creaky, creepy cabin. Do they dare enter? What will they
find? And what is with all those bones their dog is collecting?
Deliciously spooky, fun-filled artwork brings the story to ghostly life. Back matter includes information on ghost towns and the history of the song.

Set to the tune of “She’ll be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain,” this book begs to be sung
with a group of enthusiastic participants. Playful font and a repetitive structure enhance the
visual appeal, and the rhythm of the text is perfectly attuned to singing, including occasional
made-up words to balance the rhymes and rhythm.
Classrooms and storytime audiences will delight in the blend of music and imagery that
help make this book, and spooky season, a little more accessible to young children.

Starred Review
'There’s a ghost town in the mountains, turn back now!'
Garrigue’s cartoonish illustrations and luridly lovely lilac color scheme, along with
Becker’s jaunty
verse, make for an exploit that’s creepy but never overwhelmingly so. The varied, echoing
refrain—“Scrim-scram! Step-stomp! Click-clack! Bump-thump!”—should guarantee enthusiastic audience
participation.
A tuneful and deliciously scary escapade, perfect for Halloween. (Picture book. 5-8)
Kirkus
A ghost town is the setting of Becker and Garrigue’s shivery spin on “She’ll Be Comin’
Round the Mountain.”
In suspenseful, cumulative fashion, the kids light upon a new fright on each spread…
Amid an ever-present parade of ghosts, inky pinks, purples, and teals give an aura-like energy to
this appropriately goosebump-y ride.
An author’s note and sheet music conclude.
